"For the magic in blue keeps the darkness away, when gremlins and ghouls come out to play"

In an era of `Celebratory Days`, the end of summer is fast approaching, the kids will soon be back to school, and once again all things witchy will preoccupy their minds with Halloween eagerly awaited. Amongst the kerfuffle of pumpkin carving and face paints, there is some benefit to Halloween from a literary perspective to, but how so?

Let me introduce you to `Room on a Broom` the spookiest offering from Julia Donaldson. An absolute classic children’s book. With her inventive verse blending with superb illustrations from the hugely talented  Alex Scheffler, she takes us, and our little ones on a journey with `the witch` and the friends she makes along the way, namely cat, dog, bird and frog. Courting catastrophe when the broomstick breaks (well why wouldn`t it with a witch, a cat, a dog, a bird and a frog sitting atop!) and a dragon, albeit a rather friendly one, wants to eat them, this is a tale of friendship and helping others, wrapped neatly in a world of make-believe.

Whilst on face value Room On The Broom is just another children’s book, Donaldson cleverly weaves a moral lesson into her story, encouraging social awareness and empathy.

She also uses rhyme and repetition, both of which according to an evidence base assist with learning to read. Her imaginative storylines, along with Alex`s great illustrations keep young ones enthralled, making reading a pleasurable experience, and promoting a passion for books.

So whilst its great fun to go trick or treating, why not use this festive time to give your young ones something more valuable, the gift of reading, of imagination, and of a fondness for classic kids stories.

May The Magic Never Fade, Stephan.
